The German actress of Turkish origin debuted in 2004 in the film “Head On”, directed by Fatih Akin. The picture won several prestigious awards, including the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, and for her performance Kekilli won awards in such nominations as “Best Actress” (Lola Award, German Film Academy), “Rising Star” (Bambi Award, Germany), “Best Young Actress” (Undine Awards, Austria), “Best Female Role” (New Faces Awards, Germany).
For films “Head On” and “Die Fremde” (director Feo Aladag) Kekilli was nominated for the European Film Academy Award in the category “Best Actress”. In 2010, she won the Lola Award for her participation in the film “Die Fremde”, and a year later for the same film she was awarded the German Film Critics Award for Best Actress. The performance of the actress in the film “Eve Dönüş” (2006, director Omer Ugur) also caught the attention of film critics – for it Kekilli won the Golden Orange award at the International Film Festival in Antalya. In 2014, for her role in the series “Game of Thrones”, Sibel Kekilli was nominated for the US Screen Actors Guild Award.
In addition to the fact that most of Kekilli’s filmography touches upon social problems, in particular the life of immigrants, Sibel has a very active social position. She supports the activities of the non-profit organization “Terre des femmes”, which fights for women’s rights. Sibel Kekilli also is an activist against domestic violence, violence against women, gender inequality.
Earlier it became known that Rimma Zyubina and Christian Petzold will be members of the International Jury of the 8th OIFF, which will be held from July 14 to July 22. The name of the Head of the Jury will be known later.
