Investors Club is a closed business event that took place on July 21 as part of the business programme of the 8th Odesa International Film Festival. The event was made possible thanks to the support of the venture fund TA Ventures, TASKOMBANK and IL Decameron Clubhouse Odessa

The final event within the business section is iClub (Investors Club), the number one communication platform for the cultural and business elites of Ukraine, organized for the purpose of efficient networking, finding new opportunities for investment and business development. The event was made possible thanks to the support of the venture fund TA Ventures, TASKOMBANK and IL Decameron Clubhouse Odessa

The event began with the introductory speech by the President of OIFF Viktoriya Tigipko, who noted: “The main theme of the event is innovation, new technologies and development.” After that, a brief introduction to the theme of the first block – the special report “Precision Medicine – Healthy and Long Life for Everyone” – was made by moderator James Peyer, leading stem cell biology expert, co-founder of Apollo Ventures (anti-aging, gerontology). Another speaker in the block was Richard Barker, director of the Centre for the Advancement of Sustainable Medical Innovations (CASMI), ex-general manager of IBM businesses in the field of healthcare, and head of McKinsey, a European healthcare practice. He spoke about the unique developments in genetic engineering, as well as the program “100,000 Genomes in Great Britain” that helps to understand more about rare diseases and the development of genetic therapy, in particular, about its possible introduction in the near future for the treatment of diseases such as diabetes. Richard Barker also touched on alternative ways to treat cancer through stem cell stimulation. He said that by stimulating stem cells, the process of aging and age-related diseases can be slowed down. “All this is done so that all of us can do yoga on the beach at 120,” the speaker joked at the end.

The second block of the program – Panel Discussion: “Hard Talk: Challenges. Business Ukraine” – was opened by Viktoriya Tigipko. The moderator was journalist, writer and TV presenter Dmytro Gordon. The speakers of the discussion were: Sergei Tigipko, the chairman of the Supervisory Board of TASKOMBANK, Olena Kosharna, co-founder and CEO of Horizon Capital, and Oleksandr Sokolovskyi, founder of Textile-Contact Company, president of the All-Ukrainian Employers’ Association “Ukrlegprom”. Introducing Serhiy Tigipko, Dmytro Gordon said: “In the conditions of such unpredictability, I would like to hear the opinion of those who are not afraid to invest.” The answer to that came shortly. “If you can say to yourself, “I am a Ukrainian businessman, I'm not going leave this country”, then you will start investing. I live in Ukraine and will continue to do business here. I am not driven by circumstances, and I always look for new markets for business development,” said Serhiy Tigipko. “If we think that we are not able to lift this country up, then that is what will happen. Business heroes are among us, we believe in ourselves, develop, and develop together, and our strength is in our unity!” added Olena Kosharna.

The speakers discussed the possible priorities of business development in the current crisis, the insecurity and risks for investors in Ukraine, the necessary changes that are needed to improve the investment climate in our country, and emphasized that changes always present new opportunities, and advised everyone, and especially young people, not to miss out on any chances.

The third, final, block of the program, which was personally moderated by the President of OIFF Viktoriya Tigipko, began with the presentation of director Sergei Loznitsa. The director talked about the beginning of his creative path and the difficulties he encountered in becoming a director. “You have to realize that every frame, each editing choice, it all represents what you wanted to say, what will be interpreted by the viewers. That is your moral responsibility,” he emphasized. Then Sergei Loznitsa emphasized on the necessity of national cinema and the screenings of Ukrainian films abroad. Special attention was paid to the topic of state funding in the film industry. The subject of educational programs for young people and opportunities for improving the skills of the existing professionals – film schools, master classes, lectures – were analysed in detail. “No matter how talented you are, if you don’t have a team of good, responsible, professional people, you will not succeed,” said the director.

After the block ended, the audience was invited to the Box Catering buffet and cocktails from the official sponsor of OIFF-2017 TM ARARAT on the open deck at IL Decameron Clubhouse Odessa, which is the official partner of the Odesa Film Festival. This gave everyone the opportunity to continue the conversation in an informal setting.
